How this LED Savings Calculator works

Most online LED calculators use simple watt-substitution tables (e.g. "replace a 400W metal halide with a 150W LED"). This calculator uses lumen-based equivalence — LED wattage is calculated as existing lamp lumens ÷ LED efficacy (lm/W). This ensures the replacement LED delivers the same light output, making the comparison accurate regardless of what you are replacing.

Electricity costs use state-average commercial tariffs from the AEMC and AER — not US-based or generic rates that make Australian LED payback calculations meaningless.

Lumen-based calculation
LED watts = existing lumens ÷ lm/W. Accurate for fluorescent T8, T5, metal halide, HPS, halogen and CFL replacements.
Real Australian tariffs
NSW 30c, VIC 27c, QLD 28c, SA 42c, WA 31c, TAS 25c, ACT 29c, NT 28c per kWh (AEMC/AER commercial averages). Override with your actual rate.
Real cost data only
ROI and payback calculations use only costs entered by real users. No estimated or fabricated pricing figures.

How to Use LED Savings Calculator

Three steps from your first visit to a professional ROI report — no software to install, no spreadsheets required.

Step-by-step: Calculate your savings

1
Choose your existing lamp type — select from T8 fluorescent, metal halide, HPS, halogen, and more. Enter how many fittings you have and your operating hours per day.
2
Select your state — the calculator automatically applies the correct commercial electricity tariff for NSW, VIC, QLD, SA, WA, TAS, ACT or NT.
3
Hit Calculate — you'll instantly see annual energy savings, CO₂ reduction, and a lumen-based recommended LED replacement wattage (far more accurate than watt-for-watt substitution tables).
4
Open the ROI section — enter the cost per LED fitting and installation cost. The calculator adds applicable government rebates (NSW ESS, VEU, SA REPS) and shows your exact payback period and 10-year net return.
5
Generate PDF Report — click the green button to download a branded, shareable report showing all savings, ROI, CO₂ data and product details. Perfect for presenting to building owners, finance teams or procurement.

LED Savings Calculator — Frequently Asked Questions

How much can I save switching to LED lighting in Australia?

Most commercial and industrial facilities save 50–75% on lighting electricity costs. The exact saving depends on what you are replacing, your state tariff and operating hours. South Australian businesses typically see the highest savings due to the state's high electricity tariff (~42c/kWh). Use the calculator above to get a figure based on your specific situation.

What is a typical LED lighting payback period in Australia?

Commercial LED upgrade payback periods in Australia typically range from 1 to 4 years. High-wattage industrial applications (metal halide or HPS high bays running 16+ hrs/day) often pay back in under 2 years. Adding rebates from the NSW ESS, Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU) or SA REPS can reduce payback further. Enter your actual costs in the ROI section above to calculate your specific payback period.

Which states offer LED lighting rebates?

NSW — Energy Savings Scheme (ESS): typically $80–$200 per fitting for commercial projects, administered by IPART. Victoria — Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU): $50–$150 per fitting through accredited installers. South Australia — Retailer Energy Productivity Scheme (REPS): co-investment support for energy efficiency upgrades. QLD, WA, TAS, ACT and NT do not currently have equivalent statewide commercial rebate schemes.

Why use lumens instead of watts to calculate LED replacement wattage?

Watt-for-watt substitution tables are a rough guide at best. LED efficacy varies from ~80 lm/W (economy) to 170+ lm/W (premium), so the LED wattage needed to match a given light output varies considerably by product quality. This calculator uses the formula LED watts = existing lumens ÷ LED efficacy (lm/W), giving you an accurate like-for-like replacement wattage regardless of product tier.

Can I use this for warehouse / high bay LED replacement?

Yes — select Metal Halide 150W, 250W or 400W (or HPS) as your existing lamp type. The calculator will automatically populate the standard lumen output for that lamp. Choose your LED efficacy tier for the high bay fitting you are considering, then see your energy savings and — once you enter actual product and install costs — your payback period. High bay LED replacement typically delivers the fastest ROI of any commercial upgrade due to high wattage and long operating hours.

What is the difference between Economy, Standard, High Performance and Premium LED?

Economy (80 lm/W) — budget import fittings, variable quality and warranty. Standard (110 lm/W) — mainstream commercial-grade fittings. High Performance (140 lm/W) — premium commercial fittings specified for industrial and retail applications. Premium (170 lm/W) — top-tier products using the latest LED chips. Higher efficacy = fewer LED watts needed = greater energy savings.
